They're tastiest" one wolf remarks, thinking of a future feast. I think Kallie George has a way with words and manages to tell a story that feels full in a short amount of ink. It's so cute! Beds filled with cattail fluff, acorn hats brimming with soup-if you love little whimsical miniature worlds and nature, you'll probably love the story. I adore the idea of a hotel in the woods run by and for the little creatures of the forest. Mona is courageous and kind, and a charming protagonist. I mean, I do get that wolves are the foes of the little creatures of the forest, I just wish they weren't always the villains! I'll put examples below.)īut, overall, it's a very sweet story about friendship, bravery and belonging. The synopsis and the adorable illustrations made me think this might be a pretty tame story (and overall it certainly is!) but if you have sensitive children do be aware that a few of the main characters have lost family members in tragic circumstances (in the past, and off page) and and that the wolves are the "bad guys" here (again!? sigh. ![]() You see, the story follows mostly the small creatures of the forest and, as such, many either live in fear of the carnivores or have already had frightening encounters with them. Dare I say, cuddly? Yet, it has some bite. ![]() ![]() ![]() I definitely have to read more books in the Honey Moon series, it is just so good! Honey is a strong-willed young girl with loving parents and an annoying brother, and she lives in the Halloween town of Sleepy Hollow. Along the way, she learns lessons about lying and forgiveness. With the help of Shiver, the owner of a new popsicle shop, she goes on a mission to find out who stole the necklace. Her mother would absolutely kill her if she lost her prized necklace, and so she must do everything in her power to find it before her mom notices. The next day, she realizes that the necklace is gone. ![]() ![]() After taking it out if its hiding place, in a book, she shows it off to all of her friends and lets them try it on. Honey Moon has a sleepover with her friends, and she wants to show them her mother's prized necklace. ![]() ![]() Alosa was absolutely fascinating to read about, and probably one of the most badass female protagonists I’ve read. She knew who she was and what she wanted, and she didn’t let anything stop her. ![]() She was cutthroat and unapologetically manipulative. Sometimes I did find the secondary pirates to kind of blur together, but the ones that you needed to pay attention to always stood out. The characters are all well developed, with great arcs and personalities that set them apart. This book also has one twist that seems somewhat obvious, but then brings up with back to back surprises that completely threw me. The plot is fast-paced, with plenty of suspense to add to the thrill. The world is vague, with the land politics and places not really mentioned, but life on the sea is shown in vivid descriptions. This book is an extremely fun read, full of romance, action, adventure, and secrets. The only thing in her way- the attractive first mate who is assigned as her interrogator. ![]() ![]() After she gets ‘captured’ by enemy pirates, she must try to discover their secrets in order to find the map to a legendary treasure. “Oh, the ridiculous things one has to do when one is a pirate.”ĭaughter of the Pirate King takes place in a world filled with ruthless pirates who will do anything for control of the seas, and follows the Alosa, the daughter of the reigning pirate king. ![]() ![]() Then, they can "read" along as you read aloud. Most children will have no trouble memorizing this story. Otherwise, how interesting can a counting book be? ![]() Roy McKie's colorful, dynamic illustrations bring the story to life. The illustrations are also very active, and help draw interest to the story. With these words I have quoted, you see the lion with the requisite number of apples balanced on top of the head. The illustrations nicely cue the young person to the words and the numbers involved. It makes the task both easier and more interesting for your child.īy using only 75 words, there is much repetition to help your youngster identify words that she or he will reuse throughout life. I found it to be a great idea to combine the two. Most simple books try to teach only counting or reading. The conclusion will leave your child giggling happily. ![]() Then the birds decide they would like the apples, and the fun really begins. This book is a tour de force for helping with reading and counting to ten, using a vocabulary of only 75 words! A lion, dog, and tiger find many interesting ways to balance ten apples vertically on their heads, building up from only one. ![]() ![]() Fun to look at and easy to use, this unique combination of cookbook and graphic novel is the ideal introduction to cooking Korean cuisine at home. With the board set, we began moving the pieces. New York Times bestseller - A charming introduction to the basics of Korean cooking in graphic novel form, with 64 recipes, ingredient profiles, and more, presented through light-hearted comics. I think Kat and I agree, now, that we should’ve added extra juice, but I did get a couple badass photos of Kat’s juice procurement method: After you’ve seen Kat squeeze the “blood” from a bunch of kimchi … … you let her pick the music (especially while she’s holding a knife). Instead, I usually add some juice that’s floating around in the kimchi container – I want that extra flavor! I WOULD NOT recommend this (and argued against it heartily). To procure the kimchi juice, Kat juiced the kimchi we planned to use in our pancake. Some olive oil to spread in the pan you cook the pancake in.(Optional, but really you should) 1/4 to 1/2 cup of delicious cheese.1 pepper (of your choice spice to taste).(Kat and I disagreed on how to procure this.) There is not much to a kimchi pancake, which is part of why I love it. Because Kat is a real cook who cares about how her process is presented on the internet (I just blog about comics), we assembled the ingredients in an artful fashion. ![]() ![]() ![]() "The thrills are sometimes cheap and the connections between stories membrane thin, but Ogawa makes it count with her precision and dedication to bringing the vision full-circle." - Publishers Weekly.Zwischen den knapp und direkt formulierten Ereignissen bleiben Leerräume, durch die der kühlende Wind der Erzählung weht." - Leopold Federmair, Neue Zürcher Zeitung Von allen Zutaten, aus denen sie ihre Geschichten mixt, nimmt sie nie zu viel. At the bottom, you no longer see traces of modern civilization, though you can hear trucks on Route 281 as they clamber out of the Kansas flats. You park at the top of a hill and follow a path down to a gulch, where a creek widens into a pond. Cather spent much of her childhood in Red Cloud, six miles up the road, and for many people who love her writing, and perhaps for some who don’t, the Cather Prairie is one of the loveliest places on earth.
